Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar1-1/2 cups waterDUMPLINGS:1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour1/2 cup sugar2 teaspoons baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 cup whole milk2 tablespoons butter, softened2 teaspoons vanilla extract1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled apple, optionalVanilla ice cream, optional

Preparation

In a large skillet, heat the butter, brown sugar and water to boiling. Reduce heat to simmer.

Meanwhile, combine the dumpling ingredients; add apple if desired. Drop by tablespoonfuls into the simmering sauce. Cover tightly and simmer for 20 minutes. Do not lift lid. If desired, serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
